New South Charlotte High School to be built off Johnston Road
As growth continues in the ever-popular Ballantyne area of South Charlotte, it is reported that Mecklenburg County Commissioners allocated the funds for CMS to acquire land in the heart of the area to build the much-needed South County High School. This high school, projected to open in 2024, will alleviate the crowded schools of Ardrey Kell, East Mecklenburg and Myers Park High Schools. CMS and the County Board have been looking for land parcels big enough to house a high school, but the lack of large tracks of land and high price tags have made the search difficult.
The site identified is across form the now closed Earth Fare on Johnston Road. It is ideally suited in close proximity to Ballantyne as it continues to grow with the approval of massive new developments and not far from new high-density developments like Waverly and Rea Farms as well as other South Charlotte neighborhoods.
Ardrey Kell, East Mecklenburg and Ardrey Kell each have over 3200 students. The new school will be a welcome relief to alleviate the crowding that they have experienced due to the demand of the area. Excellent schools in South Charlotte are one of the many aspects that draw home buyers to South Charlotte. This new, state of the art high school will be no exception.
